Does the metaverse already exist?

The description is so broad that many people say that the metaverse already exists in the digital worlds of Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite, allowing players to congregate in 2D environments.. Second Life, a social and gaming platform that is almost two decades old, is the OG Metaverse. It is being reworked. To a certain extent, there is already a metaverse in games.

But and it’s important, but it’s rudimentary. To a certain extent, yes, the metaverse does exist. But not in the scalable, continuous, and connected way it could be in the future.. However, there are already some basic elements..

The infrastructure behind today’s Internet is already allowing a large number of people to gather in virtual environments, such as when Fortnite hosted a VR concert with Travis Scott for more than 12.3 million players. The Metaverse is in the same state as the Internet in the mid-90s. Today, there is no metaverse, but a whole series of proto-metaverses — metaverses with walls. The majority of companies that want to develop Metaverse, such as Roblox, Epic Games, Nvidia, Microsoft, Decentraland, or Meta, are actually developing non-interoperable proprietary platforms.

This means that it is currently impossible to exchange virtual assets or simply communicate between one platform and another.. Until there is interoperability, there won’t be a metaverse — and we’ll discuss the critical uncertainties surrounding interoperability extensively in a future article. This inconvenient fact has led to slightly different terminology.. Now, many companies or advocates refer to a single game or platform as a “metaverse” instead..

According to this definition, anything from a VR concert app to a video game would be considered a “metaverse.”. Some go further and refer to the collection of various metaverses as a “multiverse of metaverses.”. Or maybe we live in a “hybrid verse. Facebook’s metaverse is likely to be much more sophisticated and closer to the seamlessness and intuitiveness of science fiction.

Vogue, for example, plans to hold the first Metaverse Fashion Week in March, and Oculus technology is already in use at UConn Health, the University of Connecticut medical center in Farmington, Connecticut, to train orthopedic surgery residents.. If you spend enough time discussing the Metaverse, someone will inevitably (and exhaustingly) point to fictional stories like Snow Crash, the 1992 novel that coined the term “Metaverse,” or Ready Player One, which represents a VR world where everyone works, plays, and purchases.. But the film has some fundamental differences from expert opinions about the soon-to-be-coming Metaverse, including the fact that there is only one major platform in the film, the Oasis, which is the metaverse of fictional game company Gregarious Games. Meta, the biggest proponent of the metaverse shift, has repeatedly stated that the metaverse it envisions is still 10-15 years away from being a reality, meaning that the true metaverse is being built for the next generation of consumers who will be key to maximizing their uptake and adoption will.

Still, the idea of a Ready Player One like unified space called “The Metaverse” is still largely impossible.. In the more idealistic visions of the Metaverse, it is interoperable and allows you to move virtual items such as clothes or cars from one platform to another, although it is harder than it sounds. If you own a non-fungible token, virtual reality headset, or cryptocurrency, you’re also part of the Metaversal experience. Many companies that have come aboard the Metaverse train are also imagining a kind of new digital economy where users can create, buy, and sell goods..

In the months since Facebook rebranded, the concept of “metaverse” has served as a powerful means to repackage old technologies, oversell the benefits of new technologies, and spark the imagination of speculative investors. In short, the Metaverse is an immersive network of 3D virtual environments in which people can interact with each other and digital objects as virtual representations (or avatars) of themselves. Marc Petit, vice president and general manager of Unreal Engine at EPIC Games, explained in a recent interview that the metaverse “requires shared virtual worlds that include persistence. However, the last few months of metaverse pitches from tech giants and startups have relied heavily on high visions that break with reality.

This current infrastructure is very impressive, but will likely need to evolve to support the Metaverse industry experts.
